During the week of October 12, LHS will host two student events focused on preparing students for success beyond high school.
The LHS Vision of the Graduate identifies five transferable skills students need to thrive in an ever-changing world: Literacy, Resilience, Problem Solving, Communication, and Global Citizenship. Just as importantly, we believe every student should have opportunities to explore their interests and passions as they discover their own pathway to success.
October 14 – Duncan Kirkwood: Building Resilience
On Wednesday, October 14, LHS will welcome Duncan Kirkwood, an author, veteran, and global resilience advocate, who will speak with students about the importance of resilience.
Duncan has dedicated his professional career to empowering young people, educators, organizations, and communities. His work focuses on helping individuals develop the tools they need to overcome challenges, push beyond perceived limits, and take greater ownership of their futures. Duncan holds a B.A. in Communication from Alabama State University and an M.P.A. from the University of Arizona. He is also an Army National Guard Master Resilience Trainer.
His message directly supports one of the core competencies of our Vision of the Graduate: developing students who can persevere through challenges, adapt to change, and continue moving forward when faced with obstacles.
October 16 – Career Fair: “Finding Your Pathway”
On Friday, October 16, LHS will host a Career Fair with the theme “Finding Your Pathway.” Professionals representing a variety of careers and industries will be available to speak with students about their work, the paths they took to reach their careers, and the experiences that helped them find success.
The goal of the Career Fair is not simply to introduce students to different occupations, but to encourage them to think broadly about their futures. We want students to explore their interests, ask questions, make connections, and recognize that there are many different pathways to a fulfilling and successful life after high school.
Together, these two events reflect our commitment to preparing students not only for graduation, but for what comes next—equipping them with the skills, confidence, curiosity, and resilience to find their own pathway to success.
