English Language Instruction

ELE Department strives to empower ELs to achieve social and academic language proficiency by ensuring equitable access to opportunities that promote language acquisition, biliteracy, and lifelong learning. Our Program utilizes a Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) instructional model, which consists of:

  • Sheltered Content Instruction (SCI) - Instruction in core content, grade-level classes taught by content-area licensed and SEI-endorsed teachers.
  • English as a Second Language instruction (ESL) - Additional linguistic support for ELs delivered through systematic, explicit, sustained focus on language and literacy. LPS utilizes two models for ESL instruction.
  1. Push-in:  ESL teachers works with a student in their classroom
  2. Pull-out: students work with an ESL teacher in a separate space

In both cases, ESL instruction is tied to the social and academic language of a student's grade.

You can find more information about English Learner Education at this DESE site.
