In collaboration with A Healthy Lynnfield, we feel compelled to inform our LMS community about issues and concerns regarding healthy choices continuing to educate students, parents and community members. Over the past 18 months, LPS has sponsored parent presentations such as Dr. Potee and Chris Herren. As we continue to monitor and ensure the safety of our students, parents should be aware of the rising phenomenon among young adolescents and teenagers: vaping.
While we have had a very small number of electronic cigarette infractions at LMS, it is a growing trend across the country with middle and high school students. A popular brand is made by JUUL and the devices resemble USB flash drives. Their small size, coupled with flavors like mint/fruit make them very easy to conceal from adults. E-cigarette use and/or possession is prohibited for minors and in violation of the LMS student handbook. Unfortunately, they are fairly easy to acquire from older siblings, online purchasing, etc. This recent NY Times article further explains this growing trend among teens. As always, our primary concern is the safety of our students. A strong home school partnership is one of the best ways in which we can work together to keep our students safe.
